Catch up... hospital days

I am determined to catch up on my blogging and get everyone up to date. For the entire month after Ethan's surgery to repair his hernia we were knee deep in a nasty stomach virus, a garage sale, and more...

I had planned on having a garage sale on the weekend that Ethan had surgery so it was obviously postponed. I had scheduled to have the sale on the next week but Ethan had gotten a horrible stomach virus and was too sick to have it so I moved it once again. I had Dallas' parents watch the kids on Sat, Oct. 18th so I could get everything ready for the garage sale the following Saturday. Ethan did not feel wonderful but he was well enough to go to their house. His parents wanted to keep them overnight so we let them. They did really well on their first night away from home and didn't wake up at all.

I worked my butt off on the garage sale and when we picked the kids up on Sunday morning Paige had thrown up. Are you freakin kidding me! Dallas' parents also pointed out some spots on Ethan's hands that they thought were bites of some sort. I noticed some eczema on his elbows too but just figured he was allergic to something in their house. By that evening Ethan was showing more and more of a weird patchy, red, purple, rash that was not raised and looked like those scary rashes you see online. I called the pediatrician and ask what to do. She said if the spots did not change color ever so slightly when you pushed on them then he had to go to Cooks. Sure enough his spots did not change color at all and I was off to Cook's.

Dallas stayed behind with Paige until we knew something more. It was about 7 pm when we got to Cook's and they checked us in immediately. Once we were checked in we were put in a room immediately. Ethan was so upset since it was his bed time and he was already tired from spending the night at D's parents the night before. The ER doctor looked very puzzled and I have to say that made me uneasy. They decided that they needed to do blood work. We had to hold him down forever while they accessed which arm would be the best. The attempted one arm and were unsuccessful. Then they had to start all over on the other arm. When I thought okay this can't get much worse they wanted to catheterize him for a urine sample. Great! After all that was over we waited.

After waiting for sometime the doctor comes back in and starts asking more questions. He proceeds to tell me that their is an abnormality in Ethan's blood work and we need to run it again. He wanted to put a block in his hand this time in case they had to get more later or administer medication. So I got to hold him down while they put an iv in his arm and covered it in several layers of tape and such to keep him from pulling it off. Every time I would get him calmed down they would come in to do vitals or something else. After the second round of blood work they told me that his clotting factor was not right. He was not clotting and now they needed to know why. They called in a specialist to look at him and discuss the diagnosis. I could tell they didn't have a clue. They admitted us at around midnight and Dallas met us at the hospital. We didn't get in our room until almost 2 am and then they wanted to wake him up for vitals. Are you kidding me!!! Don't You Dare Wake Him Up Again! We got very little sleep that night and it would prove to be the same the next night.

They didn't do much to Ethan at all during the hospital stay they simply ran test and kept sending different people to look at him. He was feeling much better and we were having a hard time keeping him busy. He was the only sick kid in Cook's running up and down the halls and spending his entire day in the playroom. We took him on many walks around the hospital grounds to keep him busy. Once all was said and done they determined that he does not have a blood disorder or clotting problem. The clotting problem was caused by the virus he had. They said that his antibodies attacked his clotting factor and their was nothing we could or should do. As long as he was eating, feeling okay, and not running a high fever he would be fine. The rash would fade and his clotting would return to normal but they didn't know when. They said it could take up to 6 months for it to return to normal. They have no idea why his body reacted this way but at least we know he doesn't have a fatal blood disorder.
