Beware of Momma & Daddy Bear!

Yesterday evening when I walked into the daycare to pick up the kids I was met in the hall by the director. She said, did you hear what happened? I said no, what now. She said Ethan got bit. My first question was by what? Another kid, oh duh. I was just thinking ants, bugs or the occasional playground critter. It never crossed my mind once that another kid had bit him. We do not hit, push, kick, bite or any of that at our house. My kids don't even know what most of that is yet. When Paige dragged Ethan out of the car this weekend I made her apologize, get out of it and give it back. I am not allowing those behaviors from the very beginning.

I continued to talk to the director and I ask all the obvious questions; is Ethan okay, who did it, what happened and what happened to the kid who did it? She said they could not tell me who did it. Ethan had not provoked the child or done anything aggressive towards him. So its a him! She said by law they are not allowed to discipline the child except for talking to him. I ask if I needed to take him to the doctor. Was he going to get something from being bit. She laughed and said the kids don't have rabies Lisa. Well I don't know this little kid, he might. She assured me he would be fine and that it wasn't her son. Her son is in the twins class too. We kind of laughed and I continued into their class to pick up the kids.

I was met by Miss Anna and Miss Corina with faces of solitude. They said, Okay Mom. I said I know Tiffany told me. We started talking and they proceeded to tell me mostly the same things. I then see Ethan's arm and it is horrible. The little kid locked his jaw like a damn dog on my kid's arm! Are you kidding me, muzzle that kid! They said that they often pair our kids with other kids to play because they are so nice and play well with others. She said they were all sitting in the floor playing and the little boy just leaned over and latched on. She said poor Ethan cried and cried. It probably hurt but I imagine his feelings were hurt too. I hugged my baby as they told me more.

I was just talking to Miss Anna now and I commented on how ridiculous it was not to discipline the kids at all. She said he went to the "thinking cushion" and they had a talk. She said she does not stand for that kind of crap in her class room. She hasn't had a bite in a long time. She apologized even though she was sitting right there. She said they would be talking to his parents and she would be watching the kid closely. I know it happens eventually to all kids but for some reason it is so very hard to handle. I knew it was one of three little boys, not like I was going to do anything to the child, but still.

Anna and I continued to talk about the situation in their classroom. Right now they have three little boys that are 3. Once the kids turn 3 they move to the next class; however, if they are not completely potty trained they can not move. The three little boys are having difficulty with speech as well so they haven't been moved up yet. One little boy is Korean and doesn't speak any English and the other little boy is a sad story. He has been passed around his family and is now living with the Grandpa that doesn't care. It is very sad but I don't want his emotional problems affecting my kids. Is that selfish? Oh well, don't care it is the way I feel. Anna said she is going to internally separate the kids into older and younger. She is going to take the younger and her assistant will be with the older kids to help this problem. I know she said that they are only allowed to stay in the two year old room 3 months after their birthday so I don't know what they will do after that. I have known about this situation since the little boys joined the class a few weeks ago but I can't really say anything to the director. I am not supposed to know all the personal details of the other kids. I am a very involved parent and I spend a lot of time talking with the teachers. They have my number on the wall so they can call me at any time. I ask yesterday why I was the only number on the wall. Was I just the neurotic mother of the bunch? They said no I was the only one who really cared. This surprised me. They said most parents will say leave their kid at daycare unless they HAVE to come get them. What! I am not that kind of parent. True, I have a job that allows me to leave and attend to my children but honestly I would not work unless I had such a job. My children are the most important thing in the world and nothing comes before them. If they have any concerns what so ever they better call me!

They instructed me to put neosporin on the bite and he would be fine. We finally headed out the door and I was stopped again by the director. She looked at Ethan's arm and was stunned. She said the same thing Anna and Corina did, "that is the worst bite I have seen". Wonderful. She said she would be talking to the little boys mother this evening. She apologized again and we were on our way. I was now nervous about having to show their Daddy. If you think I am bad about protecting them you should see their Daddy.

We pull in the driveway at the same time as Dallas. I get out Ethan and meet D on the other side of my vehicle. I said, be prepared. He said for what? Ethan got bit. His reaction was the same as mine, by what? I explained the situation and he reacted the way I thought he would. He wanted to know which kid it was so he could go bite him! Parenting is such an interesting roller coaster of emotions. Between Dallas and I there is no chance in hell for anybody that messes with the Mayfield twins.

Ethan is doing fine. He did not mind us putting medicine on his boo boo. Ethan is being very mature about the entire thing. Glad one of us is! I am watching those little boys...
